Man Run Over and Killed by Train

Police and railroad authorities have confirmed that an Amtrak train struck and killed a pedestrian on the tracks Saturday evening at a station in Fairfield.

According to Craig Schulz, an Amtrak spokesman, the train, which began its journey in Newport News, Va. and was bound for Boston, had 185 passengers and crew aboard when the accident occurred at 6:20 p.m. No passengers on the train were reported injured.

Police in Fairfield said that the pedestrian was a white male in his 50s. Amtrak and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which was leading the investigation, did not release the identity of the victim nor did they release details of the circumstances surrounding the incident late Saturday.

Schulz said that the train was delayed for two-and-a-half hours for the investigation, but it then continued its journey to Boston.
