Initial reports from the Connecticut State Police show that there was only one fatal highway accident in the state over the long holiday weekend.
Troopers patrolled all roads and highways across Connecticut, from midnight Tuesday, until midnight Sunday, targeting drunken driving violations and aggressive drivers. In addition, sobriety checkpoints and targeted DUI patrols were in place over the entire weekend.
The early statistics, through Friday, show that there were 448 speeding arrests which compares with 1,134 for the whole weekend last year; 138 seat belt arrests, as opposed to 170 last year; other hazardous moving violation arrests stood at 1,101,and last year was 1,134; Driving under the Influence arrests were 14, compared to 43 last year. In total there were 512 accidents this year, slightly down on the 562 last year, with 65 injuries and one fatality. Last year there were 92 injuries and one fatality.
