Woman Hits Utility Pole Causing Blackout

Last Saturday, a single vehicle accident caused a power outage lasting more than three hours in the Botsford area.

According to police, Katherine Threlfall, aged 18, of Middlebury was driving a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner SUV southward on Toddy Hill Road, at about 2 a.m., when she lost control rounding a curve, hit an embankment, flew through the air and struck a utility pole.

The utility pole was on the west side of Toddy Hill Road, across the street from Masonicare Health Center, which is a nursing home and assisted living facility.

The heavily damaged SUV came to rest on its roof and the utility pole broke, with the lines falling onto the ground.  Connecticut Light and Power Company spokesman said their crews responded quickly to restore power and that the outage lasted around 3 hours.

Botsford Fire Rescue attended the scene and Threlfall was assessed for injuries by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

After investigating, police charged Threlfall with driving under the influence by an underage person, possession of alcohol by an underage person, and making a restricted turn.
