Snow Storm Causes Minor Accidents in Danbury

On Saturday the snow storm caused minor accidents as it brought several inches of snow to Danbury and the surrounding area.

According to the National Weather Service the highest amounts were in Fairfield County, Easton, Ridgefield and Brookfield, all with six inches or more.

The weather led to several accidents, with a tractor trailer jack knifing on Interstate 84 around 8.30 in the morning, leading to traffic delays for around two hours. The driver, who was uninjured, was given a ticket for driving too fast for the conditions.

In another accident, this time at 3 a.m., not long after the snow had begun to fall, 19 year old Karen Loor was driving on Triangle Street and her car skidded off the road and ran into a tree and a fence. Police also then found Loor walking in the same area.

Loor was charged with evading responsibility, driving without a license and traveling too fast for conditions. Freire-Recuenco was charged with conspiracy to evade responsibility and driving with a suspended license.

First Settlement In Wrongful Death Lawsuit is For $5 million

A wrongful death lawsuit has been settled for $5 million.

On Christmas day 2011 there was a fire in a home in Stamford which killed three girls and two of their grandparents. The fire began after a contractor, Michael Borcina, had left a bag of ashes from the fireplace in a bin in the house. He was renovating the home and was accused in the lawsuit, along with others, of making the home into a firetrap compounded by not installing a smoke detection system while he was carrying out the renovation.

The fire killed Grace and Sarah Badger who were 7 year old twins, 9 year old Lily Badger, and their maternal grandparents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson. The girl’s mother, Madonna Badger who happened to be dating Michael Borcina at the time, escaped.

The lawsuit was brought by the father, Matthew Badger.

According to Badger’s lawyer, this $5 million is the first settlement as there are more pending against several other defendants.

Snowstorm Leads to Several Accidents

On Friday there was a snowstorm which arrived at the worst possible time, during the morning commute.

There were so many vehicles on the roads, and with gusty winds accompanying the snow, there were white out conditions which led to several accidents. Danbury had nearly two inches of snow, but as the storm was so fierce, it all fell within an hour or two.

Some of the schools closed including Newtown, Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield, New Milford, Oxford and Shelton.

The state Department of Transportation started work at 4 in the morning and treated the roads with a magnesium chloride solution before the snow arrived, which helped to cut down on the number of accidents. Nevertheless there were two crashes on the Merritt Parkway, by exit 36 in Stamford and exit 31 in Greenwich. Two lanes of the Route 8/25 connector were blocked in Bridgeport by a crash at the Lindley Street exit, and Interstate 95 was blocked up by an accident near exit 34 in Stratford.

However, people on the whole were driving carefully and once the sun came out the treated roads recovered quickly.

Man Falls from Hanging Rock

Following a fall from Hanging Rock on Sunday, a young man is in the hospital.

According to authorities, the accident happened at Hanging Rock State Park around 4 p.m. on Sunday when 19 year old Wyatt Bloom of Gold Hill was hiking in the park with friends. He was apparently playing near the edge of a cliff without the appropriate footwear when he fell. He was not on a hiking trail at the time.

Originally it was thought he had fallen 50 feet but when firefighters arrived at the scene they determined it was nearer 30 feet.

When park rangers arrived they found Bloom lying face down with his hands under his face. He was then loaded onto a stokes basket and strapped down. The rescuers then needed to get him to the parking lot where a helicopter could pick him up and take him to hospital. He is now said to be in stable condition.

Park rangers say this is the first time in two years that someone had to be airlifted from Hanging Rock State Park.

Operation SANTA launched for the holidays

Connecticut State Police have launched their 2014 holiday season traffic enforcement program.

The program is to be called S.A.N.T.A. which stands for Stop Another Needless Tragic Accident, and extra troopers will be on patrol across the state to try and prevent accidents and injuries. DUI enforcement will increase dramatically as home and office parties often serve alcohol and although the troopers hope that there will be a designated non drinking driver, they will be out on the state roads looking to keep drunk drivers off the road.

Any person who sees a driver who they think might be drunk is asked to s call 911 straight away and report it to police, as they consider it to be an emergency situation.

Other parts of Operation Santa 2014 will include enforcement of the laws relating to distracted driving, cell phone use, speeding, and not wearing seat belts.
