Woman Serious Injured in Crash

A 35 year old woman from Bridgeport, Connecticut, suffered head trauma and a fractured hip on Tuesday in a two-vehicle accident.

According to State Police, Marie D. Rene was traveling on the ramp from Interstate 684 northbound to Interstate 84 eastbound. She lost control of her sport utility vehicle, a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe, near the end of the ramp, causing her vehicle to leave the ramp and enter the grass divider which separates the entry ramp from the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84. She then hit a ditch, became airborne and landed on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 where she collided with a 2006 Chevrolet pick-up truck. The Chevrolet spun onto the south shoulder of the highway and then left the roadway. Rene’s vehicle then crossed the eastbound lanes, entered the center median of the highway and rolled over. Rene was not wearing a seat belt and so was ejected from the vehicle and onto the center median.

The driver of the pickup was uninjured and Rene was transported by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition late Tuesday night.

Police said that I 84 was closed for part of the afternoon to allow the helicopter to land and to carry out the investigation.

Tips for Traffic Safety

Traffic safety in the United States should be a priority for every driver and passenger who gets into a motor vehicle. As vehicle occupants as well as pedestrians, all of us want to get to where we are going safely and without incident. The following are some tips for maintaining a safe traffic environment on America’s roads.

  • Always wear your seat belt. Wearing a seat belt is at minimum a secondary law in all 50 states and a primary law in most of them. Properly fastening your seat belt significantly reduces the risk of serious injury and death should you be involved in a car crash. Ensure that everyone in the vehicle with you also has their seat belts properly fastened.
  • Avoid the temptation to cut in front of other vehicles. Doing so can potentially cause drivers around you to have to brake suddenly, particularly if traffic is heavy.
  • Keep a sharp focus on the road and avoid distractions. Too many drivers do things like texting and talking on their cell phones, dealing with unruly kids, putting on makeup, etc. while trying to drive. Dividing your attention between the road and these kinds of tasks is extremely dangerous. If there is something you need to do that may take your attention from the road, pull over and stop in a parking lot or designated area like a rest stop.

Safely Crossing the Street

Teaching children how to properly and safely cross the street is one of the most important lessons that they can learn from a parent or guardian. Children don’t have the awareness that is necessary for crossing the street that adults have because that is the kind of skill that is learned rather than being inherent. Teaching them to safety cross even neighborhood streets that typically have far less traffic than city streets requires as much “showing” as it does “telling”. Parents should make it a priority to take the time to take their children to a nearby street, hold them by the hand and actively demonstrate the steps that should be followed when crossing from one side to the other.

The steps that are involved in safely crossing the street are simple but it is easy for young minds to forget one or two of them which could lead to an accident. That is why it is recommended that parents go over each step individually with their child. The steps are as follows:

  1. Stop – Always stop on the grass or sidewalk, never on the street itself.
  2. Look – Look both ways, making sure all lanes of traffic are visible.
  3. Listen – Listen for vehicles that may be out of the child’s line of sight.
  4. Think – Evaluate what you see and hear and decide if it is safe to cross.

With these steps firmly embedded in a child’s mind, they will be able to safely and confidently cross any street with or without parental supervision.

Woman Hits Utility Pole Causing Blackout

Last Saturday, a single vehicle accident caused a power outage lasting more than three hours in the Botsford area.

According to police, Katherine Threlfall, aged 18, of Middlebury was driving a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner SUV southward on Toddy Hill Road, at about 2 a.m., when she lost control rounding a curve, hit an embankment, flew through the air and struck a utility pole.

The utility pole was on the west side of Toddy Hill Road, across the street from Masonicare Health Center, which is a nursing home and assisted living facility.

The heavily damaged SUV came to rest on its roof and the utility pole broke, with the lines falling onto the ground.  Connecticut Light and Power Company spokesman said their crews responded quickly to restore power and that the outage lasted around 3 hours.

Botsford Fire Rescue attended the scene and Threlfall was assessed for injuries by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

After investigating, police charged Threlfall with driving under the influence by an underage person, possession of alcohol by an underage person, and making a restricted turn.
